A shower chair is designed for elderly, disabled and those recovering from a disease or a surgery and do not have enough strength to stand throughout a shower. It is a modification of standard chair, made from either plastic or aluminium that has rubber feet to prevent the chair from slipping. There are different models of a shower chair that may or may not have backs, handrails and commode as per the requirement of the consumer.

The need for shower chair varies from person to person and therefore it is important to consider various features before buying it. These features include;

Size

It is important to evaluate the size of the washroom before installing a shower chair

Make sure it is neither too large or too small to fit in the bathtub or the area specific for bath.

Weight Capacity

How much weight a shower chair can bear is a question you should ask prior to buying it. Normally, shower chairs can bear upto 250lbs but it is important to see other options if there’s an overweight elderly individual at home to minimise the risks of the chair tumbling over.

Backrest And Handrail

Various designs exist in different shower chairs for elderly.  Some of them may possess a backrest which is suitable for those individuals who have limited balance and inadequate back strength to support themselves while sitting. Handrails on the other hand helps a person to sit and then stand from the chair and also adds to comfort.

Limitations

It is important to understand the physical capabilities of the individual before you buy them a shower chair. For instance a shower chair is ideal. For those with restricted back strength and are recovering from a recent surgery where as a transfer bench would facilitate those with both restricted back strength and mobility. Similarly, those individuals with sufficient stability and strength to support themselves while sitting, a shower stool is a feasible choice that stays within the budget.
